Anxiety is a significant problem. A lot of us try our best to ignore it, me included, but sometimes that doesn’t work. There were times when I felt so overwhelmed that I just wanted my mind to stop thinking. I felt like it was difficult to breath.
These are some handy tips you can use when you feel that rush of anxiety.
Please keep in mind I am in no way advising you against taking medication. The following ideas can be used with medication prescribed by your doctor or for people who need to de-stress.
1. Watch a sitcom or a stand-up comedy
Sitcoms are usually under 30 minutes. They are funny and tend to make you feel good about life. My favourites are Modern Family, The Middle, and The Big Bang Theory. Stand-up comedies are great as well because they are full of wit and humour.
2. Go for a walk
Go for a walk, preferably not on your treadmill. If possible go to the park or the beach. Surround yourself with nature. Soak up the rays of the sun, and breath in the beauty of the sky, the ground, and everything in between!
For me cleaning is therapeutic. I’m not sure if this is helpful for everyone, but it works for me. I especially like ironing and organising the wardrobe. I also find it easy to practice mindfulness while cleaning.
4. Cooking and/or Baking
The great thing about this is that afterwards you have something to eat!
Note: Your dishes should be healthy. Eating unhealthy food is not good when you are anxious.
If you are not able to go out, maybe do a fun exercise at home. For example an energetic aerobics workout like Zumba. You can also try non-instrumental excercises like the plank.
6. Concentrate on your breath or do breathing excercises
A breathing exercise can be as simple as as taking deep breaths in and out for a count of ten. I think of an affirmation every time I breathe in and out because it helps me concentrate better.
The worst thing you can do when feeling anxious is to feel alone. Go out and talk to people. It’s difficult concentrating on your problems when someone is having a conversation with you. Talking to friends who are far away will also help you get your mind off your problems. Technology helps us with this in a big way.
Note: Do not make it a pity party where everyone has a negative mindset.
8. Dress up
When you look good on the outside you feel good on the inside. Grooming yourself or just playing dress up will make you feel better.
9. Do NOT think about the future.
When you are already anxious, thoughts about the future make it worse. When thinking of the future you should always do so with a positive attitude.
